Initially, the island was managed by the Ko Samui District. Raja Amphoe District Ko Pha-Ngan was established on October 1, 1970, then consisted of two tambon, Ko Pha-Ngan, and Ban Tai. That turned into a complete district on April 12, 1977. Ko Tao Sub-district was established on August 15, 1982, by splitting three administrative villages from Ko Pha-Ngan Sub-district.
You can reach the island by ferry from the mainland from three ports to Surat Thani and Chumphon. There is an opportunity to reach Ko Pha-Ngan by ferry from Ko Samui (the king's ferry port, which is nine kilometers from Ko Pha-Ngan).
Since 2012 Kannithi Aviation has been trying to build an airport on the island. Kan Air has spent around 500,000,000 baht to acquire around 32 hectares of land to build a passenger terminal that is capable of handling 1,000 passengers a day and a runway of 1,095 meters to accommodate turboprop aircraft such as the ATR 72-600 series water. Ko Pha-Ngan appeared prominently in the novel Alex Garland The Beach and was also mentioned in the 2006 Song Magick by the new rave band Klaxons (but perhaps more as a reference to the shore of the 1996 novel than to the island itself).
Full Moon Party is a monthly dance music festival set in Hat Rin NOK Beach and is ranked full moon. This event mainly offers electronic music and attracts around 30,000 revelers on a regular month.
